Illinois State Board of Education
New U.S. Department of Education Race and Ethnicity Data Standards
DATA COLLECTION, STORAGE, AND REPORTING:
DISTRICT RESPONSIBILITIES
Collection and Storage
Districts will use the required two-part question to collect race and ethnicity information for individuals. The collected data, including original individual responses to the two-part question, must be kept by districts for at least three years. Districts must be able to retrieve the response details, i.e., whether an individual is Hispanic/Latino and which race(s) apply.
Reporting
Districts will use the data collected from individuals to include each person in one of seven exclusive reporting categories:
• Individuals who are Hispanic/Latino will be placed in one category, regardless of race(s).
• Individuals who are not Hispanic/Latino will be placed in one of the six other categories.
Districts will use the seven exclusive categories to report race and ethnicity data to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). The seven categories will be used regardless of whether data are being reported for individuals or in the aggregate, e.g., at the school or district level. (ISBE will also use the seven categories to report aggregate race and ethnicity data to the U.S. Department of Education.
