Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the New Illinois
Certificate Renewal Process

What is the Professional Development Requirement?
In five years you must complete the equivalent of 120 CPDUs if you are a fulltime teacher or a prorated amount for those who have not taught the full cycle, to recertify.

What are the options for renewal/recertification?
Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs)/Continuing Education Units (CEUs) -Attendance of Conferences, or Institutes
-Staff Development classes presented by state providers
-Activities such as having a student teacher or serving on a school or district committees
Advanced Degree
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification process
Eight semester hours of graduate -level coursework
Subsequent Illinois certificate or endorsement
Requirements for becoming NCLB "highly qualified" in another teaching area

All activities must be included on your Statement of Assurance, which is found on ECS (Educator Certification System) located on the ISBE website www.isbe.net.

How long do I have to complete the requirements for renewal/recertification?
Teachers have five years to complete the requirements, and must maintain record of those completed requirements for an additional five years, after each cycle is completed. (Note: Each of your five year renewal/recertification requirements should be kept separately.

Who does not have to complete the requirements?
Anyone who holds a School Service Personnel certificate (Type 73)
Administrators - separate requirements
Paraprofessionals who are certified

What happens if my status changes (i.e. I become an administrator or take a leave)?
If you have a change in status, you must go to the ISBE website, access your information using your password, then go to the summary page and click on Personal Data to make any corrections (i.e. name change, address, phone, etc.)
If you go on leave, resign, retire or become an administrator or substitute you may change your status to Valid and Exempt and only complete the % of you requirement for your active semesters.
