Residents Invited to Tour Monroe Middle School
A tour of Monroe Middle School will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 11 preceding the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting to give residents the opportunity to see how the renovated and expanded school compares with conditions at the Hubble Middle School. A tour of Hubble preceded the December 14 Board Meeting. Monroe was renovated and expanded following the successful 1999 referendum.
The Board of Education has voted to replace Hubble by building a new middle school in the southwest part of the District. Implementing that decision is contingent on finding an appropriate site and securing funding for the construction of a new school through a referendum. The City of Warrenville has indicated that it will donate a site for the new school, but at this time an appropriate site has not been identified and secured.
The renovation of Hubble is estimated to cost $46 million and occur over four years. The cost of a new school on another site is projected to cost $35 million without the land costs. Building a new school on the existing site is estimated at $39 million and includes about $4 million for removing asbestos and tearing down the existing school.
Monroe is located at 1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton. It is home to 874 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. |
