Power Outages Close Two Schools
Two District 200 schools were dismissed early today (Monday, November 28) due to power outages that impacted seven schools and the administration building. The electricity went off about 10 a.m. and was restored intermittently until 2 p.m. when the power went back on in the administration building. Wheaton North High School students were dismissed shortly before noon when the generator malfunctioned. Many classrooms in the school are interior to the building and do not have exterior light sources. Students at Edison Middle School were also dismissed shortly after noon. The generator at the school malfunctioned and emitted smoke through the building, causing students to be evacuated. Parents at both schools were notified of the dismissal through the District’s automated calling system. Parents of Wheaton North and Edison students who did not receive a call or the call went to an incorrect phone should contact the school to correct their student’s emergency contact information. The other schools without electricity (Emerson, Sandburg, Whittier, Monroe, and Jefferson) were able to operate on a normal schedule with generators and natural lighting. All schools are expected to operate on a normal schedule Tuesday.
