General Information
The building that houses Hubble Middle School opened in 1925 as Wheaton Community High School. It served as a high school until 1992, when the Wheaton Central High School program moved to the site of the former Wheaton Warrenville High School. In the fall of 1993, the building was renamed Hubble Middle School and became the home of a sixth, seventh, and eighth grade middle school.
Although the building had additions in 1956, 1963, 1969, and 1978, it has not undergone major renewal or renovation during its life. In fact, it is the last of the District’s 20 school buildings to need major renewal to bring it to the same standard as other renewed schools in the District. Jefferson School, which serves the District’s preschool program, was partially renovated in the mid 1990’s, but needs additional renewal as the preschool program expands into the older parts of the building.
As the Board of Education looked at the options for renewing Hubble, it did a cost/benefit analysis to determine whether it was more cost efficient to renew the existing building or construct a new school on the Hubble site or at another location. After many months of discussion and community meetings, the Board voted in January 2004 to build a new middle school in the southwest part of the district. The motion did not include any reference on how the existing site would be used in the future.
