    Outdoor Recess

Cooler weather is upon us and this is the time for parents to be checking the forecast to decide what type of outer garments are needed each day. We ask that the students come to school dressed for the weather.
When the sky turns to clouds and rain, we will conduct lunchtime recess indoors as well as when the temperature drops below zero wind chill, which is the District expectation.
Looking forward to the beautiful snowfalls, please remember that students must have snow pants AND boots on to play on the playground or grassy areas that are covered with snow. If they do not have snow pants AND boots, we will ask them to stay on the plowed blacktop area.
Recess time is only 25 minutes and the students look forward to this exciting time. We use the WGN weather site to check the Wheaton wind chill temperature.

  •  Christmas Giving Tree 2016-2017

As you may know, during the holiday season, the Wheaton faith community supports families who are in need. Last year, close to 1,000 families received help during the holidays. As a school, we also support the efforts through our donations of food, gifts and household items.

This year, Longfellow School will have a Giving Tree. Interested families can take an ornament from the tree and provide a corresponding gift. Gifts can be dropped off at school anytime before December 2nd. We ask that gifts be left unwrapped and have the Giving Tree tag attached to the gift.

The Giving Tree will be set up in the Longfellow vestibule during Parent Teacher Conferences and throughout the holiday season. (As always, there will be other ways to give as the weeks get closer to the holidays too.)

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mary Cortes, Social Worker, at 630-682-2080.

About Us

Dear Families and Friends of Longfellow Elementary School,

Longfellow Elementary School is proud to be part of Inspiring Excellence in Wheaton-Warrenville Community School District 200.  Our school is a nationally recognized 2007 Blue Ribbon School!  Longfellow School is a kindergarten through fifth grade building, rich in history, located in downtown Wheaton.  The original building was built in 1874 as a grade and high school combined and was named Central School.  Many famous graduates attended Central School including Edwin P.Hubble and Red Grange.  The school went through many additions and changes and our current building was completed in 2001.
At Longfellow School we offer many opportunities for students to grow in their learning.  We have a diverse student population and currently have families that speak over twenty different languages.  Student learning at Longfellow is a partnership between students, parents and the staff to provide an outstanding educational environment.  By working together, our students learn and grow academically, behaviorally and socially.  In addition to the core academics of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and health, we offer art, general music and daily physical education.  Our fifth grade students may elect to participate in a band or orchestra program as well.
At District 200, we believe that technology must be an integral part of our instruction and communication. We know that the community has high expectations for the quality of education in our public schools. We realize that successful schools result when a partnership exists between the schools, parents, and the community. Toward that end, through this website, we hope that our website offers an additional communication vehicle for a strong home-school partnership.
I believe in the incredible potential of all students at Longfellow and enjoy working with our families and staff to create a strong learning environment.  We have an outstanding staff and a very dedicated PTA that brings hundreds of volunteers into our building each year.  Our entire Longfellow community is committed to ensuring the best possible elementary school experience for all of our children.
