Notes from Mrs. DeSalvo
Dear Lowell Parents,
Spring starts the last quarter of this school year and it also leads into planning for the next year. One important item at this time of the year is the creation of next year’s class lists. It’s a lengthy and complex process. We use a variety of input in order to build balanced classrooms.
At Lowell, grade level teams meet to discuss students’ needs. Input is also given by specialists such as the Reading Specialist and Teacher, English Language Learner Teacher, Resource/Inclusion Facilitators and the Principal. Various student needs such as enrichment, remediation, inclusion and language learning are taken into consideration. Our goal is to create heterogeneous groupings of students in order to offer a range of learning abilities and to attend to individual needs. No single faculty member assumes full responsibility for placement.
The Lowell School Faculty is asking parents not to request a specific teacher because we believe that a practice which routinely honors such requests may not lead to placements which represent the best interests of individual children nor all of the students. We realize that parents have great insights about their child, which may help us in our placement decisions. If you want to offer these insights, please do so in writing and send it to me no later than April 19. The information you provide will be given consideration and then perhaps shared with next year’s teacher as an introduction to your child. Postcards indicating your child’s teacher and classroom number will be sent out to parents the week before school starts. Please remember that our goal is to provide the best learning opportunity for all students. We value your input, but it is our ultimate responsibility to create the most optimal teaching and learning environment for all of our students.
Sincerely,
Denise DeSalvo
