District 200's Curriculum Development Process
The Board of Education has a goal to continue the development of an articulated, comprehensive curriculum that will result in increased student achievement. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction believes that the continuous improvement of instruction is essential to the quality and success of student learning. That improvement involves the creation and implementation of a clear process for curriculum development. That process is defined below.

The curriculum development process includes:
Creating a cycle for the development, revision and renewal of curriculum in each subject area.
Aligning District 200's curriculum with the State Learning Standards.
Articulating curriculum in each subject from kindergarten through high school.
Developing tests that measure students' success in mastering the district's curriculum.
Correlating instructional materials to the curriculum, including technology support and pacing recommendations.
Planning and offering professional development activities that support these initiatives and the curriculum that is developed.

Curriculum Renewal Cycle
The cycle includes a timeline for developing, renewing and implementing curriculum in each subject based on priorities identified by teachers and administrators. Each subject will be reviewed every five to seven years or sooner if indicated.

Aligning the Curriculum with State Standards
As new curriculum is developed, it is aligned with the state standards. The Illinois State Standards provide a curriculum framework that describes what all students should know and be able to do. While the standards are rigorous, they will not limit what District 200 students are expected to learn.

Articulation of the Curriculum
The renewal or development of curriculum includes articulation across the grade levels from kindergarten through high school. This process enables the district to identify what it wants its high school graduates to know and be able to do and provides direction for the development of curriculum at each of the lower grades.

Local Assessments
While the District has traditionally given nationally normed, standardized achievement tests, it has not directly tested the extent to which students have learned the District's curriculum. As part of the curriculum development process, local assessments are developed and administered when new curriculum is implemented. Nationally normed achievement tests and the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) will continue to be given at certain grades.

Correlation of Instructional Materials
Once the curriculum is developed, instructional materials, including software, that support the curriculum at each grade will be identified and noted on curriculum guides. These guides will also clearly show the alignment between the District's curriculum and state standards. The guides will be broadly distributed for teacher use and parent information.

Professional Development
Training opportunities for the staff are an integral part of the curriculum development process. Professional development opportunities will include training in how to develop curriculum, as well as instruction in the content and delivery of the new curriculum.

Note: Parents, community members and District 200 staff will have opportunities to participate throughout the curriculum development process.
