A Sampling of Good News from the 2002-03 School Year

Academics

  • Seniors Rebecca Wolf, Wheaton North, and Thomas Hardy, Wheaton Warrenville South, scored a perfect 36 on the ACT exam they took last spring. Only nine students in Illinois and 60 in the U.S. achieved this score.
  • Wheaton North senior David Vock earned a perfect score on the 2002 SAT.
  • District 200 students continued their record of high scores on the ACT college entrance exam.
  • Wheaton North ranks 12th out of 202 high schools in the six-county Chicago area, while Wheaton Warrenville South ranks 15th.
  • Eight District 200 high school seniors were honored as National Merit Scholars based on the scores they received on Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). These students scored in the top one percent of students in the nation on the test. Twenty-four other students earned Commended status.
  • Two of the ten students selected to the Daily Herald's 2002 Academic Team are Wheaton North High School students. Two Wheaton Warrenville South students earned honorable mention in the selection process.
  • Nearly 200 District 200 high school seniors were named Illinois State Scholars this year.
  • Wheaton North freshman Devin Patel won first place in the regional Illinois Council of Teachers of Math (ICTM) in the Algebra I competition
  • Monroe Middle School eighth grader Ken Zillman earned a Certificate of Recognition in the Promising Young Writers competition sponsored by the National Council for Teachers of English.
  • Greg Gauthier, Monroe Middle School seventh grader, placed fourth in the state's Math Counts individual competition, earning him a place on the Illinois team that won second place in the national Mathcounts competition in June.

Performing Arts

  • The Wheaton Warrenville South concert and symphonic bands earned superior ratings and first place in their class at the Midwest Band Festival in February.
  • The Wheaton Warrenville South High School Chamber Orchestra performed at the 2002 Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA) All-State Conference in January. Thirteen other students perform in the all-state orchestra and two others in the all-state chorus.
  • Hubble Middle School's show choir, Expressions, performed at Epcot Center in May.
  • Caroline Hensley, second grader at Lowell School, won honorable mention in the National PTA Reflections program.

Activities

  • The Wheaton Warrenville South speech team captured the state championship for the eighth time in school history.
  • The Wheaton North Scholastic Bowl team won the state championship and placed two students on the all-state team.
  • The Edison Middle School Fishing Club was featured in Outdoor Illinois, a publication of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
  • A team of Whittier Elementary School students won first place in the state's Destination Imagination competition and competed in the world competition.
    Athletics
  • The Wheaton North Girls Cross Country team captured the state championship with member Samantha Pollock earning the individual state title.
  • The Wheaton North Boys 2002 Track Team won its first state trophy, capturing third place behind two championship performances from senior A. J. Harris.
  • Wheaton North's Falcon football team advanced to the semi-finals of the state football championship.
  • The Wheaton Warrenville South Girls Volleyball team placed fourth in the state tournament.

Other Successes

  • The Wheaton City Council honored Katie Grant, Wheaton North, and Lauren Williams, Wheaton Warrenville South, with its annual Good Citizen Award.
  • Retired Wheaton North athletic director Bill Neibch was inducted into the Illinois Athletic Director's Hall of Fame in May. Mr. Neibch served as AD at Wheaton North for 23 years.
  • District 200 leaders presented two workshops at the Illinois Association of School Board's annual conference in Chicago. The sessions focused on the Board of Education's role in improving student achievement and the District's systematic curriculum renewal process.
  • Steve Holland, Wheaton North wrestling coach, was named coach of the year by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Association.
  • Chad Downie, Wheaton North Boys' gymnastics coach, was selected as the Coach of the Year, by the Illinois Gymnastics Coaches Association.
  • Joan Burtnette, team leader for District 200's school nurses, was named Illinois School Nurse Administrator of the Year for 2002-03 by the Illinois Association of School Nurses.
  • District 200 once again earned the Bright A+ Award given by SchoolSearch, a Kansas City based company that provides school information to families who are relocating. The award is based on academic achievement as reflected on the 2000-02 Illinois State Assessment Tests (ISAT) given to all Illinois public school children. Those scores placed District 200 in the top five percent of all Illinois school districts.
  • Nearly 60 Wheaton businesses opened their offices to more than 170 District 200 middle school students during the second annual job shadowing event sponsored by District 200 and the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce on April 25. Students gained first hand information during the two-hour sessions that will help them select courses and shape their career and educational plans for the future.
  • The Warrenville City Council adopted a resolution to give $175,000 in TIF funds to help support the purchase of equipment for the new Hubble Middle School applied technology lab.
  • Lauren Williams, a Wheaton Warrenville South senior, was one of ten DuPage County high school students named in January to the Daily Herald's first Leadership Team. Bryan Quinlan, a Wheaton North senior, earned honorable mention.

A Sampling of Good News from Previous School Years

Nine District 200 students were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition and all nine advanced to finalist status.
The Wheaton Warrenville South boys' volleyball team won the state championship.
The Wheaton Warrenville South speech team placed third in the state tournament, following three years bringing home the state championship trophy. Andrew Verstein won the state championship in impromptu speaking.
Wheaton North's Samantha Polock won the 800 meter race in the girls' cross country state tournament.
Wheaton North's Scholastic Bowl team placed second in the state tournament behind the Illinois Math and Science Academy.
Wheaton Warrenville South's 3200 relay team of Abby Gerlesits, Alexis St. Juliana, Jessa Garrow, and Jessica Winter took second place in the state tournament.
Rob Blazek, band teacher at Monroe Middle School, received the 2000 Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award.
Hawthorne Elementary School students were highlighted during the two-hour WGN morning news program on Election Day. Students conducted their own election on two Dr. Suess classics.
School Search honored District 200 with the 2001 Bright A+ Award for academic achievement.
SchoolMatch recognized District 200 with The What Parents Want Award for meeting criteria related to all aspects of the school program.
The Illinois Department of Commerce awarded a High Technology School to Work grant to a consortium of organizations with District 200 as the beneficiary of funds to equip state-of-the-art business labs and training for students to familiarize them with workplace technologies.
Franklin Middle School orchestra teacher Carrie Provost had an article published in the American String Teacher magazine and directed the orchestra-one of only two in the state--at the state capitol on Music Education Day.
Phyllis Kidd, social studies department chair at Wheaton North, was selected by the National Council on Economic Education to visit the Ukraine to study economic conditions.
Donna Wielgolewski, social studies teacher at Wheaton North, was selected by the University of Illinois to take a study tour of China during the summer and to subsequently participate in a curriculum writing project on China.
Jeremy Anderson, a Wheaton North senior, was the first high school student to be an assistant chaplain at the O'Hare International Airport Chapel.
Wheaton North students Melanie Ciolek and Paul Gauthier earned perfect scores on the 2000 National Latin Exam.
Edison Middle School student Chris Espinoza won the heavyweight title at the national USA Wrestling meet in Topeka, Kansas.
Madison Elementary students collected more than 6,000 stamps for Love Letters, a charity that sends letters and other materials to terminally ill children.
Wheaton Warrenville South senior Richard Page was selected to participate in the Presidential Classroom program during the week of President Bush's inauguration.
District 200 high schools produced 18 National Merit Scholars and 32 commended students this year.
The District's composite ACT score for 1999 is 23.9. The SAT verbal score is 576; math is 597.
More than 85 percent of high school graduates attend two or four-year colleges or universities.
The Wheaton Warrenville South speech team captured the state title for the third consecutive year, while the Wheaton North team won first place in the Performance in the Round.
Eighth grader Mile Petkovic won the prestigious American Vision Award in the National Scholastic Art Competition.

A group of Monroe Middle School students performed Shakespeare at the National Council of Teachers of English third International Teaching Shakespeare Conference.
District 200 formalized a partnership with the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce to promote school and business partnerships.
High schools wrestlers Jason Vincens and Andy Coyle took first and third places in the state wrestling competition.
Jamie Graves took first place in the butterfly at the state swimming competition.
Teams from two District 200 middle schools successfully competed in the Regional Mathcounts competition.
A team of Monroe Middle School Students took third place in the Future Cities competition during National Engineers Week.
Franklin and Monroe Middle Schools and Wheaton North High School received grants from the DuPage County State's Attorney to support drug prevention activities in their schools.
Lowell School fifth graders were invited to demonstrate their electronic portfolios to the state legislature during the Technology 2000 Conference.
The Wheaton Warrenville South marching band defended its state championship by winning the Class 5A title for the second consecutive year.
School Board Member Marie Slater was recognized as an outstanding board member in the state's Those Who Excel competition.
Kenneth Strayve, a physical education teacher at Washington Elementary School, was a Golden Apple finalist.
Ken Helberg, science teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South, was named the 1999 Illinois Boys' Class AA Track and Field Coach.
Gloria Latta, biology teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South, was chosen as the Outstanding Biology Teacher by the Illinois Association of Biology Teachers.
Bob Quinn, assistant principal at Wheaton Warrenville South, received the President's Award from the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches' Association.
Carolyn Wondrow, third grade teacher at Bower, was a finalist for the Kohl/McCormick Early Childhood Teaching Award.
Penny Perkins, physical education teacher at Wheaton Warrenville South, was chosen as the Illinois Gymnastics Coach of the Year.
Diane Markowski, physical education teacher at Lincoln, was runner-up for the National Dance Educator of the Year.
Rebecca Taylor of Wheaton North won first place in the viola category of the American String Teachers Association National Solo competition.
Five Wheaton North students and six students from Wheaton Warrenville South won membership on the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State band and orchestra.
The Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South Chamber Orchestras won a superior, Division 1 rating in the IHSA Organizational Contest.
