4th Grade

Underground Railroad

 Quilt Project

Fourth grade is very excited about being the Core Group for Mrs.  Mahler.  The children have read the novel, The Story of Harriet Tubman: Freedom Train, by Dorothy Sterling.  Each student is designing an original quilt square using muslin and textile paints to produce a quilt based on the book.  Students will also incorporate a brief piece of writing about the illustration in the lower section of the square.

The first meeting was a brainstorming and directions session.

The first step in the process is to draw a picture onto a piece of paper.

A little advice is given to fix the rough drafts.

Mrs. Mahler goes over the first sketches with the children.

Mrs. Mahler shows the children how to use the light table to help them copy their pictures from paper to muslin.
