African Drummers and Dancers
On Monday, February 24 we had an assembly that was tied into our Artist in Residence program. We had African Dancers come and perform for the entire school. We all learned a dance and sang some songs with the performers.
PERSONAL STATEMENT From John Kofi Jantuah
"For centuries it has been the custom of the Ashanti people in West Africa to use dance ceremonies as a definite function in the life of our people. I learned
from my village’s elders, while in my youth, through watching and mimicking their movements. I have been dancing, playing drums and signing since the age of five. For ten years, I studied the ancient African art of dance, drumming and signing from my uncle, Professor A.M. Opoku, the founder and director of the Ghana National Dance Ensemble, University of Ghana, Legon, Accra. It is important to me to pass these ancient African art forms to younger generations."Quote taken from: www.state.il.us/agency/IAC/Guidelines/AIE/AIE04/EthnicandFolk-Arts.PDF
