Mrs. Nielsen has been a visual arts teacher in district 200 since 2011. Mrs. Nielsen is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received bachelor's degrees in Art Education and Industrial Design. She has a master's degree in Art Education from the University of Florida at Gainesville and has completed 60 post-graduate hours from the University of LaVerne, where she is certified in Motivation and Classroom Management, School Culture and Violence, and Integrating Technology into the Classroom.

Mrs. Nielsen is also a working artist specializing in colored pencil and charcoal drawings and an active member of the Illinois Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association.
