    STEM Night at Whittier
As part of a continued, district-wide emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the Whittier PTA organized a STEM Night for hundreds of the school’s students and families. The February 23rd event brought in outside organizations related to STEM - the heart of today’s high-tech, high-skill global economy.

Beginning at the middle school level, students are able to take classes like robotics & engineering and design & modeling. However, the Whittier PTA and school principal Chris Silagi believed it was important to expose students and parents to the opportunities in the real world related to STEM, even at the elementary level.

At STEM Night, students and parents were able to experience computer design, robotics, 3D printers (pictured), hovercrafts, and athletics. Several students even hosted their own exhibits. Elementary orchestra teacher Jeanne Johannesen hosted a music table, “String Instruments and Sound Creation.” At her exhibit, students were able to experiment with a string bass, cello, viola and violin by plucking strings, watching vibrations and experimenting with strings to see how the length, thickness and tightness affected the sound of the instrument.

Johannesen said the evening was exciting for the students, parents and staff. “It was great seeing the students and parents alike become engaged in activities and see the possibilities for a future in these fields. Several of my orchestra students said they didn't realize there was such a variety of scientific and mathematical jobs, and that musical instruments have so much to do with physics, sound, and other science fields,” said Johannesen.
