Summertime is Enrichment Time
This past week, 28 students from Franklin and Monroe Middle Schools took advantage of a week-long Broadcast Media summer enrichment program offered at Wheaton North High School. During the class, students are learning basic equipment skills and video editing techniques as they create two videos of their own, All About Me and a news feature.
Wheaton North Broadcast Media teacher Sandy Verdon, along with Wheaton North junior and class assistant Grace Wimpffen, guide students through telling their own personal story on camera; properly using a video camera; and editing video with software Final Cut Pro. For their news feature video, students were tasked with creating their own Falcon Weekly
segment on a topic of their choice. Students chose interesting, creative and humorous topics like sunscreen safety for teens, the rise of cat fashion shows and idioms like 'it's raining cats and dogs' coming true.
Verdon believes her class allows students to use their creativity while gaining technical skills in video production. "Students have an opportunity to explore something that isn't available to them at the middle school level and see if this is an area they want to explore when they get to high school," says Verdon. Since the students are taking a class at their future school, Verdon also uses the opportunity to take the students on tours of the building. "I tell the kids when they get to high school, they have to get involved in something other than just going to class. Wheaton North has a wide variety of activities and leadership opportunities."
