|Board Refinances Debt
Earlier this month, the Board of Education successfully completed phase two of a four-phase bond refinancing plan to reduce a portion of the District’s outstanding bond and interest payments. The Board was able to reduce future tax levies by over $3.3 million.
In winter of 2014, the Board passed a resolution to restructure bond and interest payments when bonds became callable. The recent bond refinance was the second of four targeted refinancing phases. Interest rates are at historic lows, and this presented an opportunity for the Board to refinance a portion of its debt to save money for taxpayers.
The bonds that were refinanced had an average interest rate of 4.17% but were refinanced to 1.59%. The bonds to be refinanced in the third phase are callable in 2018 with an average interest rate of 4.89%, but the refinancing could take place as early as 2017 depending upon market conditions and Board approval.
Superintendent Jeff Schuler was pleased with the outcome of phase two refinancing. “This was a tremendous opportunity for the Board of Education to save significant tax dollars in future years through a thoughtful restructure of existing debt. It truly was a win for the District 200 Community,” says Schuler.
