Diane CorbettCarly Carraghercarly.carragher@cusd200.orgAt Hawthorne, we spiral common language and strategies through the grade levels. This continuity helps students grow as they progress through the grades.
One example of this is the accuracy strategies we teach students to use when they become stuck on reading a word. Our K-2 teachers, EL department, Reading Department as well as many other specialists use this common language to aid our students in successful reading. Please see the link below for a full size copy of these strategies that you can use at home with your children. Hawthorne Accuracy Strategy Bookmark
Also, we spiral common language for comprehension. In fiction, we ask our students to “Check for Understanding” while they are reading in order to monitor and check their comprehension:
- “Who is doing what?”
- “Who did you just read about and what just happened.”
- Check for Understanding Reminder Cards (visual card we use when teaching)
As readers, everything we do is grounded in comprehension and monitoring our understanding while reading. Greater gains and successes in reading occur when students have strong understanding.
Enjoy! ~ Hawthorne Reading Specialists
