• Math Fact Families

In 1st Grade we study "Math Fact Families" as a way of learning our addition and subtraction facts.  When we see how numbers are related, we can memorize simple addition and subtraction problems and see how certain numbers fit together.
Here are some examples of the Math Fact Families we'll study throughout the year:

                          12  :  8  :  4
                                                  8 + 4 = 12
                                                  4 + 8 = 12
                                                  12 - 8 = 4
                                                  12 - 4 = 8

                         11 : 6 : 5
                                                   6 + 5 = 11
                                                   5 + 6 = 11
                                                  11 - 5 = 6
                                                  11 - 6 = 5

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We will start by building a solid addition and subtraction foundation
If children have automaticity in their basic facts, they often feel more
comfortable when using their higher level thinking skills to problem solve.
We will also learning strategies that will last a lifetime!

Does your child know how to count up and count back
    Use a numberline?
Has your child explained our touchpoint system?
Has your child started memorizing basic facts?
We're getting away from using our fingers, and finding better strategies every day!
