Our program is designed to assist students as they become successful, independent readers.  This assistance may be in the form of individual, small group, or whole class instruction, depending on the needs of the students.  Our focus may be on one, or several reading components such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.  It is our delight to work with virtually every student at Madison at some point during their time at Madison Elementary School.

Key components of the Reading Department

    ·         We use a research-based reading support program that gives students the extra “boost”they need to improve their reading skills, enabling them to succeed in the classroom.

    ·         We support the kindergarten students as an integral part of our reading program to establish and develop early literacy in our youngest readers.

    ·         We provide professional development and resources for our classroom teachers and specialists in the area of literacy.

    ·         We closely monitor each student’s reading progress and provide reading support if warranted, or additional materials for classroom teachers to support the student.

    ·         We provide a book room that contains leveled fiction and non-fiction books; we continue to build this library of highly engaging student material.
