The Daily 5 is a management system, a curriculum framework AND a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.
Cafe is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. This system allows me to work on goal-setting with students in individual conferences, develop small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and target whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferences.

Along with strategies for your student to use while reading, we will be using I PICK to determine if a book is a good fit. This is an easy way to remember the key things to look for when trying to find a book at the appropriate level of your student.
I - I look at a book...
P - Purpose - why do I want to read this?
I - Interest - does this book interest me?
C - Comprehension - am I understanding what I'm reading?
K - Know - do I know almost all of the words?
