    6th Grade Band
After one full year in the 5th grade band, 6th graders now incorporate band into their daily class routine. Meeting with Mr. Novak, a 6th grader's typical schedule consists of five complete rehearsal days and one pull-out sectional. The music difficulty level for this ensemble typically begins at grade 1 and progresses to a grade 2 or 2 1/2 by the end of the year.

Book needed: Warm-Ups and Beyond. Percussionists should order upgraded mallets. All of this can be ordered ahead of time or at schedule pick-up. Band Uniform Polo Shirts are ordered at schedule pick-up only.

    7th Grade Band
Rehearsals occur every day in this ensemble. The 7th grade band continues solidifying  knowledge of content learned in the 6th grade band. New opportunities on the calendar in 7th grade include participating at the annual Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) District Organizational Contest as well as auditioning for the extra curricular jazz band. The music difficulty level for this ensemble typically begins at grade 1.5-2 and progresses to grade 2.5-3 by the end of the year.

Books needed: First Book of Practical Studies, Artistry of Fundamentals. These can be ordered ahead of time or at schedule pick-up.

    8th Grade Band
Rehearsals occur every day in this ensemble. This group strongly builds from our 7th grade band and features some of our middle school's most experienced musicians. This group annually performs at the Illinois Grade School Music Association (IGSMA) District Contest and is open for select instruments to audition and join the jazz band. Our 8th grade ensemble is the premier performing ensemble at Monroe Middle School. We perform at school assemblies, extra events honoring high student achievement as well as a tour of the elementary schools in May. The music difficulty level for this ensemble typically begins the school year at grade 2.5  and progresses to grade 3-3.5. Performing in this ensemble prepares our students well for auditions into the high school band.

Books needed: Second Book of Practical Studies, Artistry of Fundamentals. These can be ordered ahead of time or at schedule pick-up.

5th Grade Band (Mr. Novak teaches at Sandburg Elementary School)
Recruitment for the 5th grade bands occurs district-wide during the first few weeks of school in your child's 5th grade year. Please keep an eye out for our annual flyer as well as any handouts that come home with your child during this time. Students are fitted for instruments to find the best possible match and this also occurs at this time. The music difficulty level for this ensemble typically begins at grade .5 and progresses to grade 1.

    Jazz Band
Jazz band has a new look! It features both a traditional and contemporary feel as we look to incorporate more student involvement in the jazz program. Auditions for our stage band will occur during the first and second full weeks of school. This audition is typically open for 7th and 8th graders, but 6th graders are welcome to prepare an audition as well. Audition music is handed out in May for practice over the summer months. The Stage Band performs at home band concerts and competes at the IGSMA Jazz District Contest. As we look to incorporate flutes and horns and tubas and clarinets into jazz band, a secondary ensemble within the auditioned group forms and is our Jazz Club. This group meets on Monday mornings alongside the stage band to rehearse full group selections. Get excited!
