In 1988, Ms. Athos began her teaching career teaching seventh grade block at Wheaton Warrenville Middle School. She worked at "Old Hubble" for its entire existance, 1992 to 2009, moving to "New Hubble" in 2009. Since 2006, she has taught eighth grade literature and writing.
Melissa graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1988 with a B.A. in English and a minor in vocal music. In 1992, she earned an M.S. Ed. in school guidance counseling. A lifelong learner, since then, she has earned over a hundred graduate hours in a variety of fields including literature, writing, history, music, and education.
In 1997, Melissa and colleague, Karen Volkmer, collaborated and in 2001, copywrited their writing program, Writing for Life, which has helped thousands of children to improve their writing. This process approach allows children to learn to revise compositions. Teachers in Arizona, Oregon, and Wyoming as well as those in other Illinois districts now use this writing program.
Ms. Athos enjoys working with her students and their parents and believes that when parents and teachers work together, good things happen for students.
