Mr. Phillips began teaching at Wheaton North High School in 1999. Prior to that he taught at Champaign Central High School from 1989-1999. During the 1996-1997 school year, he took a leave of absence to teach English at Buyuk Kolej in Gazi Osman Pasha, Anakara Turkey. From 1991 through 1999, he was a visiting faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he taught pre-undergraduate, undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral classes for English language learners (ELLs).
Mr. Phillips has a BA in Russian and English from the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University where he also completed the coursework for teacher certification. He holds an MATESL degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he also completed the coursework necessary to be certified as a reading teacher. Mr. Phillips also holds an MS in Educational Leadership from Dominican University.
Mr. Phillips served as the Department Chairperson for World Languages and Music from 2001-2015. He is currently back in the classroom fulltime and loving it! Mr. Phillips loves expanding his teaching experience by team-teaching Biology, Chemistry, and Physics for English language learners with his favorite teaching partners, Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Sorghan!
