Mrs. Secker has been at Wheaton North High School for 24 years. During that time, she served as the ESL Instructional Aide and then taught ESL 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 plus all ESL content classes. She currently teaches ESL 2, ESL 2 LAB, ESL Reading, and content classes. The anchor reading program currently in use by Mrs. Secker, Lexia Strategies, is web-based and available for online at-home practice once a student is signed in to a reading class by the instructor. The program moves students through decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency exercises which are aligned to Common Core standards. It individualizes and differentiates instruction, moving most students toward rapid gains. Mrs. Secker sponsors an after-school tutoring club for English learners (in conjunction with Wheaton College). Additionally, she has lived in the Wheaton community for over 40 years and is a certified art teacher, naturalist, and a K-12 reading specialist. She taught evening Adult ESL classes for over 10 years and served as Special Instructor in the Art Department at Wheaton College for one year. Both of her children graduated from WNHS and appreciated the opportunity to befriend and mentor ESL students while they were at North. In her free time, Mrs Secker enjoys hiking, birding, reading, and gardening.
