• Good Morning Emerson Families,

As I stood outside this morning monitoring traffic, every single Emerson parent that drove by waved and smiled at me.  I was reminded once again of how fortunate I am to work with this amazing community!  Thanks for a lovely start to the day.

I would like to solicit your help in increasing the percentage of parents who answered the 5 Essentials survey.  The last time we surveyed families like this was in 2013.  The information you provide helps us as a school to celebrate what we are doing right, as well as areas in which we need to improve.  If you have not yet taken the survey, please consider doing so by following the link: https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/status/school/emerson-elem-school-wheaton/

As you learned this week, there are a few changes to the way that the PARCC assessment will be administered in our district.  Because we will use a paper and pencil assessment, we will be able to shorten the number of days that the computer lab is shut down and laptop carts are unavailable.  At this time, the plan is to begin testing March 11 and finish on the 17th.  This is a tentative plan, which hinges on materials from the testing company arriving in a timely fashion.  We will test English Language Arts on the first three mornings and Math on the final two mornings.  More information will be forthcoming.

I have heard from several parents their disappointment in not receiving a call from the school about a lockdown drill yesterday.  I apologize for not sending out communication.  At no time were staff or students in any danger.  We took extra precautions when a staff member saw someone looking in the windows.  I have instructed staff to always report anything that seems unusual.  I will always lock down the school until the situation has been assessed.  I happened to be working with a police officer on something when this occurred, and she immediately responded.  Everything was fine, and classes resumed as normal.  In the future, I will notify you if we lockdown for a reason besides one of the 3 mandated drills we run each year.  Thank you for your understanding.

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend filled with time to cozy up with a good book and your children.

    Sharing in the caring,

    Debby Klein
