    April 2019

    Dear Bower Families,

I hope you and your families are able to enjoy time together and have a wonderful spring break.  I look forward to everyone coming back to Bower rested and ready to take on the remainder of the school year.

Spring is also the time we begin to make plans for next year.  Many professional hours of planning and preparation are spent ensuring the most appropriate class placements for each child.  Bower has an extensive process for placing students that ensures each class includes a heterogeneous grouping of students that creates an atmosphere where all students can learn.  All of our teachers and specialists take an active part in this process to consider all essential factors of education including the learning and social needs of each child. In order to ensure that this process emphasizes each child as well as the class as a whole, we will not be accepting parent requests for specific teachers for next year.  We always welcome your input including feedback on your child’s ideal learning environment and will accept recommendations on a setting that will maximize his or her learning needs, but we will not accept requests for a specific teacher or for social placements (including students being placed with specific friends) for next year. The principal has the final decision on placement, so please refrain from making recommendations to staff members.  Please contact me if you would like to discuss your child’s individual learning styles and needs and your input will be taken into consideration. We are asking that you trust our staff and the process that we utilize to place your students—all of our decisions will be made with the best interest of all of the children at Bower.

ILLINOIS ASSESSMENT OF READINESS (IAR) will be given to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students starting on Wednesday April 10th through Tuesday April 16th.  It is extremely important for students to be in attendance for these assessments so please try to schedule avoidable absences around these dates. While we recognize this is only a small measure of what is taught in schools each year, it is important for students to do their best on these exams.  Teachers have been preparing students and parents can help by encouraging their children to do well and sending them to school well rested and ready to do their best.

As always, I would like to thank all of our Bower families and our staff members for being so generous with their time and talents.  Everyone is invested in the growth and success of all our children. Within the Bower community, we all work together “inspiring within everyone a passion to excel”.

Thank you for your commitment to all our children.
