    About Amnesty International

    -Amnesty international is a not-for-profit global organization, consisting of over 3 million supporters, members and activists

    -It works in over 150 countries and territories to defend human rights and social justice, with offices in 80 different countries

    -They campaign against infringements of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards

    -Amnesty International does not work under any government, political ideological, economic interest or religious pretenses

    -Started in 1960 after Peter Benenson’s article “The forgotten Prisoners” which led to the campaign “Appeal for Amnesty 1961’



    -To defend the freedom of expression

    -To protect women’s rights

    -To abolish the death penalty

    -To demand justice for crimes against humanity

    -To demand corporate accountability when companies have abused people’s rights


     What we do at Wheaton North?

     -Write for Rights (sending letters to politicians and victims of crime)

    -Fundraising nights

    -Movie nights

    -Join peace demonstrations in Chicago

    -Peace garden in the courtyard

    -Attend speeches and informational meetings

    -Volunteer in the community
