Multilingual Learners
Welcome to the CUSD 200 Multilingual Learners Program
CUSD200 is committed to providing an exceptional educational experience that promotes language proficiency, academic achievement, and personal growth.
Program Overview
The Multilingual Learners (ML) Program at CUSD 200 is designed to support the academic and social-emotional development of our linguistically and culturally diverse students. We offer tailored instruction that integrates English language development with core academic subjects, helping students achieve proficiency in English while valuing their home languages and cultural identities. Our goal is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel connected and prepared for success throughout their educational journey.
Key Program Features:
Student Diversity: Over 1,400 students benefit from our instructional support services. Our students speak more than 70 different languages, with Spanish, Burmese, Chin (Haka), and Arabic being the most common.
Instructional Goals: Our primary goal is to ensure that students meet or exceed grade-level academic achievement standards and enhace student's ability to communicate effectively in English for social and academic purposes.
Core Instruction: English Language Development (ELD) is integrated with core academic content. ELD refers to instructional practices and strategies designed to support MLs in acquiring proficiency in English. The focus of ELD is on helping students develop the language skills necessary to succeed academically and socially in an English-speaking environment.
Bilingual Instruction: Bilingual instruction intergrates Spanish support is to enhance comprehension and facilitate the transition to English proficiency, ensuring students can fully engage with the curriculum while building Spanish and English skills. Spanish/English bilingual instruction is only offered at CUSD200 bilingual program schools.
Sheltered English Instruction: Available at middle and high school levels, these courses group ML students together. Teachers deliver content-area instruction in English, adapting language to the students' proficiency levels. This approach supports students new to the country whose primary language is not English and students at beginning levels of English language proficiency.
Co-teaching: Implemented at all school levels (K-12) to support ML students by integrating language development with subject-specific instruction. General education and ESL or Bilingual certified teachers collaborate within the same classroom to deliver both content and language support simultaneously. This partnership allows for targeted instruction that addresses academic content and English language skills.
