At each regular Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jeff Schuler recognizes one community partner for their involvement, dedication and commitment to supporting our students, staff and schools in a variety of ways. At the March Board Meeting, Dr. Schuler recognized the City of Wheaton Mayor Phil Suess for his involvement in the Business INCubator program at the high schools, and the entrepreneur program at the middle schools. Dr. Schuler also recognized City of Wheaton Public Information Officer Susan Bishel for her partnership with our Career Pathways program. Susan and the City of Wheaton hosted a student intern who is in the broadcast media pathway. During the internship, this student helped with projects such as recording City Council Meetings and creating videos for social media. On behalf of the CUSD 200 community, we thank Mayor Suess and Susan Bishel for their time, volunteer work, dedication and support of CUSD 200 schools, students and staff. Mayor Suess and Susan Bishel were presented with certificates of appreciation for being a valued community partners. #YourCommunitySchools

A creative initiative by Mrs. Lopez and Ms. Hazen has brought the magic of Readers Theater to Bower Elementary School's third graders! Their new club, which quickly drew 40 eager students, recently gave teachers a lunchtime treat with a lively performance of "The Lion King." In April, a second group of students will take the stage with their own performance. What a fantastic way to showcase our students' talent and enthusiasm for reading. #YourCommunitySchools

For this week's Classroom Close-Up, we're stepping into the world of business at Edison Middle School, in Ms. Usha Iype's Entrepreneurship class. Think "Shark Tank" for middle schoolers. Just like the INCubator program at the high school, this class challenges students to use the engineering design process to identify a problem and customer need – all with the ultimate goal of presenting a viable start-up plan to local stakeholders. Parent mentors and guest speakers are invited throughout the semester to share their expertise; whether in business, problem-solving, or just providing a fresh perspective. This is invaluable in helping our students develop their entrepreneurial skills. In this week's class, students were testing their knowledge of business finances by calculating fixed and variable costs, profit and break-even points. After completing the worksheet, they moved on to applying their knowledge in an interactive game called Visa Financial Football to help teach financial concepts and money management skills. In addition, two groups of students were working on their business product development. One group brought in samples of their lower sugar, higher protein brownies for their peers to taste test against their competitors. The students provided this group with valuable feedback via a Google Form. Another group practiced their business pitch with Assistant Principal Mr. Jim Zimmerman. Ms. Iype's class is giving these students a real-world experience in entrepreneurship, teaching them valuable skills in business, finance, and product development, while sparking their creativity and problem-solving abilities. #YourCommunitySchools

This week's Classroom Close-Up takes us to Ms. Sara Garner's fifth grade Program of Accelerated Curriculum and Enrichment (PACE) reading class at Whittier Elementary School. Students in this class have been reading and preparing to perform the Greek play "Speed:The Story of Atalanta," which tells the story of men who fall in love with a beautiful young woman named Atalanta and are racing to win her heart. This is no easy task as Atalanta just happens to be the best runner and hunter in the Greek world and the price of defeat in a race with her is death. Students have been focusing on more than memorizing their lines to perform this play for their peers. During class, they have been practicing their performance while focusing on their tone, inflection, flow of reading out loud and public speaking/reading skills. Through this exciting and engaging unit, Ms. Garner's class demonstrates how literature can come alive, fostering not only a love for reading but also crucial communication and performance skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

We recently stopped by Mr. Eli Mondrella's Adaptive Physical Education class at Hawthorne Elementary School for a Classroom Close-Up. Students in Mr. Mondrella's class are part of the Social Academic Integrated Learning (SAIL) Program at Hawthorne. This program is designed to meet the needs of children in the areas of communication, social interaction, and sensory regulation. Positive interventions and strategies are used to address unique needs, support adapting to environmental changes, and repetitive or stereotypical activities. Through a variety of activities in adaptive P.E., students work on balance, strength, cardio, sports skills and breathing, while simultaneously focusing on their social skills and communication. In this adaptive P.E. class, students used scooters to navigate around the gym to retrieve puzzle pieces as they worked with partners to complete a puzzle. During this lesson, they had to communicate choice, follow directions, use their social skills to work with their peers to complete a puzzle, and practice patience, taking turns all while navigating a scooter. #YourCommunitySchools
