Edison Middle School Teacher Amy Schwartz had the unique opportunity to travel to Costa Rica over spring break for an immersive tropical cloud forest experience with seven other Chicago area teachers, and staff from The Morton Arboretum. This trip helped teachers develop classroom activities and resources that connect their students to tree conservation efforts.
The teachers were selected for the experience through an application process, which considered the applicant’s number of students, their level and need of resources, how they plan to use the experience in their classroom and their thoughts on the importance of conservation.
The trip was supported by the Walder Foundation as part of the Arboretum’s Global Tree Conservation Program and Center for Species Survival: Trees to expand their impact through education and first-hand experiences for educators.
After their trip, the teachers will create curricula for their schools about the field experience, including what they learned about Costa Rica’s unique biodiverse ecosystems. Participants will also meet at the Arboretum in June for a follow-up workshop.
“We want students to experience hope, not climate anxiety,” said Schwartz. “Many of the educators in the program had pollinator gardens, and Edison even has its own prairie, which gives students the opportunity to know, and love, and eventually care for the earth, other organisms, and each other. The Forest Immersion trip was the most powerful and inspiring educational opportunity I've ever experienced. I have big plans for my classroom.” #YourCommunitySchools

Mrs. McInerney’s 8th grade science classes are ready for some football!🏈
Students collaborated in small groups to design and build a field goal post using only 8 items or less. They did an awesome job testing their designs (using the tiniest footballs), recording their data, calculating and finally displaying their results!
We wrapped up class by predicting who would win this Sunday. While we ended up with more votes for the 49ers, but Mrs. Mac is still cheering for Taylor’s boyfriend! 🙌🏻🏈💕
