Over the past few weeks, more than 35 Wheaton North High School staff members and CUSD 200 Administrators such as Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Schuler, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, Mrs. Melissa Murphy and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Dr. Chris Silagi, have spent time shadowing Wheaton North High School students for a day. During the Shadow a Student experience, staff members immerse themselves in student life at Wheaton North by following an assigned student's class schedule. At the conclusion of the day, staff and students come together for a debrief to share what they learned and observed. The takeaways have been extremely impactful on the culture and climate of the school, the value of building authentic connections in school, the challenges of balancing academics and extracurriculars and the ability to identify roadblocks that impede learning as well as addressing ways to improve the student experience and planning out long-term changes to be made. Sean Kennedy, an Instructional Coach and coordinator of the “Shadow a Student” program at Wheaton North, highlighted that the “overwhelming amount of interest in the program demonstrates the genuine desire to establish and maintain positive relationships within the building and around the district.” He continued by saying, “The ability for a staff member to step into the shoes of a high school student in 2024 will truly benefit all involved by, at the very least, opening their eyes to a new perspective.” The enthusiastic participation of student volunteers and CUSD 200 staff has made this a successful experience that fosters empathy and drives positive changes in our school culture and instructional practices. Wheaton North will offer this experience to staff members, both in the building and around the district, again this Spring. #YourCommunitySchools

Because of our district’s fiscal responsibility, we have a unique opportunity to implement the community’s plan to modernize our middle schools while giving our taxpayers even more property tax relief. As a result, if the referendum is successful, the average district homeowner will see a $71 per year reduction in the bond and interest portion of their taxes for the next 15 years.
